About this cause
Friends Of The Hook is a group of volunteers who look after the nature reserve, an area of open land next to the River Trent in Lady Bay, West Bridgford. We work with Rushcliffe Borough Council and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust to manage the site, make improvements and plan activities. Over the past 10 years we have transformed what was formerly amenity grassland into a nature-rich, diverse environment. We have created wildflower meadows, an orchard of heritage fruit trees, an autumn harvest woodland and a wildlife pond. We have also been successful in engaging the community in educational activities which enhance their enjoyment and understanding of the reserve. School children go pond-dipping and bug-hunting, and we organise dawn chorus bird walks, moth watches and bat walks.
How this cause brings people in the community together
We will organise planting parties at different times of the year to sow the seeds, plant the saplings and trees, and also to give follow-up care. These parties are popular with all age groups. We will also have activity days so people from the community can find out what wildlife there is. We will photograph these events to share at the Lady Bay Arts Festival and Open Gardens.
