About this cause

In 2016 North Yorkshire County Council announced its intention to close the branch library in Newby unless volunteers could be found to keep it open. Six local residents formed a charity, became trustees and formally took over the running of the library in April 2017. Our principal activity is to run a full library service for the benefit of the community. But we also see the library as a community hub, bringing people together to save and improve a local facility as a means of combating isolation and social exclusion. We believe that reading and a love of books helps to support the mental and physical health of all ages in our community, from pre-school storytime sessions to a home library service for over 70 elderly and infirm individuals both in their own homes and residential homes.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We will run more subsidised events for pre-school/nursery children, the elderly and more difficult-to-reach people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. These will include science, cartoon drawing, a magician, music, story writing, knitting, arts and crafts, flower arranging and afternoon teas, plus visits to the library from Brownies, Rainbows, Cubs, primary schools and special schools.
