About this cause
Age UK Plymouth exists to care for and work with older people and carers in the city of Plymouth to improve their quality of 'later life' through the promotion of choice, opportunity and independence. Ours is a local independent charity which offers a flexible and person-centred approach to meet the changing needs and aspirations of older people to help them remain independent at home for as long as possible. We offer information and advice, day care, dementia/memory services, lunch clubs, help at home, community support, activities, and carer support. Loneliness and isolation in the elderly is increasing and our current focus is on enabling people to access opportunities to grow their social networks and improve their overall health and wellbeing.
How this cause brings people in the community together
There are almost 48,000 people aged over 65 (c.18% of population) living in Plymouth, and many of these live alone on limited incomes. Loneliness and isolation is an increasing problem for older people and Age UK Plymouth's priority is to support them to be actively engaged with their communities. Our project will enable people to make new friends and extend their social networks.
