About this cause

DanceSyndrome (DS) is a charity providing inclusive dance activities in community centres across Lancashire. Founded and led by adults with learning disabilities, DS provides training for adults with learning disabilities to gain skills to lead and teach dance, as well as participate and perform. We engage over 60 people each week in Preston alone, in both dance classes and dance workshops, creating opportunities for people to come together in a safe and fun pace, meeting friends, learning new skills, building confidence, becoming volunteers and training to teach or perform dance in local theatres, schools, colleges, with other community groups and at local events. Dance leaders with learning disabilities demonstrate leadership from unexpected places and are inspirational role models.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Through dance, people of all ages and backgrounds come together to learn about themselves and each other, breaking down barriers and overcoming prejudices, stereotyping and discrimination. Confidence builds in individuals who have barriers to accessing mainstream dance and fitness opportunities. People are listened to and respected, they are supported to progress. Families network holistically.
