About this cause
We work with children and young people aged 4–18 and their families, to help them to recover from experiences of domestic abuse that they have been party to, or are experiencing in their own relationships, by offering various services, e.g. practical one-to-one support in schools and the community, and counselling and play therapy at our premises in North Shields. Being exposed to abuse can lead children to feel constantly afraid and unsafe, and this can lead to mental and physical health problems such as stomach aches, bedwetting, behavioural issues, mental health conditions and difficulty forging positive relationships with others at school or at home. We seek to redress the balance and support them to feel happier, safer, more resilient and able to cope with life's challenges.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Acorns brings families who have experienced traumatic events together by giving them a safe place to recover, heal and know that they are not alone. In addition to our core work we provide activities for the whole family including coffee mornings, trips and days out, family fun days and pantomime trips, and we work with other local organisations to ensure we are as inclusive as possible.
