Westhoughton Age Support Project (The WASPs) is a not-for-profit charity that aims to serve the elderly in Westhoughton. It is an organisation for the elderly run by the elderly. The organisation aims to improve the lives of the elderly who may otherwise be isolated and lonely. The twice-weekly events provide the opportunity for people to meet up and spend time with others in social situations. Additionally, several day trips and events are arranged to provide variety, interest and companionship. Recent trips have included the provision of a minibus for those whose mobility makes boarding a coach difficult. Volunteer carers assist with members in need of support, thus ensuring inclusivity for all.
The project gets people out of their homes to meet old friends and make new friendships. The twice-weekly social activities help to provide a purpose for many who live alone, some of whom might otherwise feel isolated. People attending the activities are able to share happy experiences, such as having lunch or afternoon tea away from home in a pleasant environment and company.
