About this cause

Friends of Par Beach was formed in 2009 in response to community interest in the appropriate use and management of Par Sands local nature reserve, access to the beach and its surroundings. Our beach is the highest profile public open space in the area, located next to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Par Beach is important to our community for recreation, tourism, sport and the range of wildlife supported. Our programme of practical and educational activities for all is well supported by volunteers. The habitat management events particularly benefit older adults, who keep active and connected with other residents. With Cornwall Council's agreement, we wish to extend volunteer involvement and site interpretation by funding more vegetation management and a new interpretive feature.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our project will continue and extend the practical activities that our volunteers enjoy. They are often new residents or local people seeking to make connections and try new things. We also find we are encouraging those with shared interests to communicate with each other. The Friends of Par Beach's committee is often made up of former volunteers taking on roles they had not previously envisaged.
