About this cause
Walthew House is an independent, volunteer-led charity in Stockport that supports people who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing or who have dual sensory loss. Supporting over 300 people each week, the charity provides a range of services and activities from a youth club, to specialist sight loss counselling and a not-for-profit equipment resource centre. Those living with sensory loss can often be at greater risk of social isolation. By providing a warm, welcoming and inclusive environment, Walthew House aims to bring people with sight or hearing loss together to enjoy shared interests and activities, which helps to combat social isolation and offer opportunities for peer support.
How this cause brings people in the community together
We facilitate inclusion through social, cultural and community activities, and take part in local and national consultations for people with sensory loss. Most mainstream activities can be made accessible through the provision of sighted guides or sign language interpreters. A recent example includes a tactile and signed guided walk with Cheshire Wildlife Trust.
