About this cause
Our aim is to break the cycle of youth homelessness in County Durham, as homelessness early on can impact on life chances and shorten it. Set up in 1998 as a response to the lack of housing support in Durham City for young people who were homeless or at risk of homelessness, we have grown and developed our services to be able to support young homeless people across County Durham. We provide information, advice and guidance, supported and permanent accommodation (including individual-focused casework), and a property management service. On average, we support around 600 service users each year.
How this cause brings people in the community together
We provide young homeless people with housing and other benefits, so they can pay rent, other housing costs and for food. This reduces social isolation by providing stability and enabling young people to explore education and employment, helping to meet their personal goals. Their health and life expectancy improve, and their increased satisfaction with their lives reduces anti-social behaviour.
