Chipping Barnet Day Centre (CBDC) aims to provide a club-like atmosphere where elderly housebound people can enjoy a day in a safe, friendly environment where they can make new friends and be entertained. It allows respite for those people who care for relatives. Staffed by volunteers with one paid organiser, escorted transport is available. Intergenerational sessions with a local pre-school are very popular, and outings to the coast, theatres and restaurants help with social inclusion. Information, advice and befriending services are offered, there is a comprehensive live music programme, and board games are often played too. A three-course hot lunch is provided and beverages and cake/biscuits as required. Our evaluations are generally excellent but members would like more outings.
The public, particularly the younger generation, will mix with the elderly/disabled, see the work of volunteers and perhaps will become volunteers in the future. Research shows this is good for mental and physical health. The members will be seen as part of the community/society and not just hidden away, which may stimulate neighbourliness, e.g. befriending in their local community.
