About this cause
Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity provides an early intervention service of vital support to families with children under 5 who have cerebral palsy and other similar motor impairments, based in SE England. Working with these families, we deliver a practical and successful, movement-based, educational approach known as Conductive Education that helps the child develop physically, socially and emotionally, leading to a more confident child with improved future opportunities in education, employment and independent living. We provide support services that include weekly swimming and music therapy sessions, access to assistive technology and sensory equipment, messy play drop-in sessions and outreach support in the home, also assisting with the transition to school.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Swimming is an activity that the whole family can enjoy together with all the associated benefits, but for our parents, many feel anxious and apprehensive about taking their child swimming. Helping families become confident enables them to access their own local community facilities, to take part in an activity other families just take for granted, reducing isolation and encouraging inclusion.
