The Fishermen’s Chapel
Art & Culture
We want to strip out and refit our kitchen to service all our community arts, music, care and craft events.
About this cause
The historical Fishermen's Chapel in Leigh was founded by Rev John Wesley in 1748 and the fishing community. In 2013 the chapel was on the verge of closure but the intervening 4 years have witnessed a transformation into a busy hub run by our steering group (of which I am one) supporting the local art, craft and music communities (see our web site for an insight). After a self funded revamp to our community room we now offer free wall space to local artists, day care for elderly and toddlers, mindfulness for those seeking direction, a free choir, a monthly live gig for local charities, low cost room hire with free promotion. We aim to grow all these projects and begin more but we are hampered by our dilapidated kitchen hence this application! All events welcome those of faith or no faith.
How this cause brings people in the community together
We bring together the elderly and toddlers at our Happy Times day care. We get local self employed networking together. Our choir provides friendship in music. Our modest room hire costs enable smaller groups to function. Our monthly concerts have raised over £3000 for local charities and drawn an audience of locals into our community room. We facilitate monthly parades for the local sea scouts.
