About this cause

In 2013 The Witham opened as a new arts centre. After just 5 years, The Witham has transformed into a vibrant centre for the arts, culture and learning, bringing alive the small market town of Barnard Castle and making the rural hinterland of Teesdale a better place to live, work and visit (the only Arts Centre and Venue in South West Durham). We now pride ourselves on programming & delivering the highest quality performance, experiences, exhibitions and outreach activities. In 2017, 12,918 people attended ticketed events ranging from live theatre to art workshops, from contemporary dance to folk music. In addition, we host weekly groups including youth theatre, dance and art workshops, and increase our footfall with visitors to the Art Gallery.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We will reach out to community groups, schools, The Hub and the YMCA to encourage young people to access performances. The workshops and masterclasses will help to form new social networks for young people. We will recruit young people to be ambassadors for the project and young volunteers to steward events and run the Box Office. The Q and A sessions will provide a space to discuss issues.
