We want to renovate the Old Tool House so it can become a store and focal point for the activities of our burgeoning friends group.
About this cause
Through a programme of events, talks and tours, walks, workshops, engagement with the Well Dressing, Chesterfield Walking Festival, Heritage Open Days, and Markets and use of various media Friends of Spital Cemetery seek to promote Spital Cemetery as a haven for wildlife, and a place of remembrance, heritage and learning for the community. We work with local gardeners (improving biodiversity) visitors on tours, trails, workshops walkers (for health) schools scouts bird watchers foragers tree enthusiasts people interested in the study of Chesterfield’s history people doing family research interested in cemetery symbolism dog walkers the bereaved for whom this is a very special place those who acknowledge the huge importance remembrance of War and sacrifice holds in our culture
How this cause brings people in the community together
Many individuals know and feel deeply attached to the cemetery from an emotional family connection to loving this green space where they can walk the dog. Our varied programme (events, workshops, tours) gives local people opportunities to meet others with like minds and help promote the cemetery and assure its place as an important heritage asset and green space in Chesterfield.
