The purpose of East Lothian Foodbank is: the prevention or relief of poverty in East Lothian by providing emergency food supplies to individuals in need. We believe that nobody in East Lothian should go to bed hungry. In the 12 months to end of March 2018 we supplied almost 4,000 food parcels to individuals and families across the whole of East Lothian. Clients are referred to us by frontline professionals when all other options for help have been exhausted. The majority of Foodbank clients need fewer than three food parcels - we provide a stop gap while other help is put in place. A minority of clients may be supported for a longer period, often because of problems with Universal Credit and other benefit delays and sanctions.
Our project aims to boost the self-esteem and confidence of men who may have job interviews and other appointments but who can't even have a shave because they don't have the money for razors. Not having basic toiletries contributes to social isolation. We promote co-operation between groups via close relationships with referral agents (eg tenancy support) and cross referrals to other services.
