About this cause
West End Bowls Club has been an outdoor Bowls Club operating from May to September providing activity for the local community. The premises were underused in the winter months, through grants and donations, the Club Room has now been extended (April 2018) which now allows additional activities, ie., short mat bowls, fitness classes, bridge sessions, etc. to take place throughout the year. The Club's finances preclude appropriate kit to be purchased for variable activities, it also lacks tables, chairs, blinds and economic lighting and heating to attract users for group activities. The Club has a good reputation for hosting bowling events, as its outdoor green is reputedly one of the best in the area, but the lack of internal furniture prohibits development of this activity.
How this cause brings people in the community together
The Club encourages sports activity among all age groups and has been successful in encouraging the elderly and less able to take up an activity to reduce social isolation. Now that the Club Room has been extended, it can widen its range of community activity. It operates on a volunteer basis, managed by a committee of 12 individuals. There are no paid staff.
