About this cause

The charity will provide equipment, free of charge, including specially designed beach wheelchairs and access matting, stored at beach locations, to support people with physical disabilities, to allow them to enjoy as much freedom as possible on our local beaches. The Scheme began April 2017 with wheelchairs at Blyth and Tynemouth, we now have plans to have wheelchairs available at Whitley Bay and North Shields. We are working closely with Northumberland and North Tyneside Councils to facilitate storage facilities. The organisation is supported by a committee of 6 people and by volunteers who help with the day to day running, supporting local schools and hospices enriching the lives of pupils and patients, by giving access to outdoor areas which most people take for granted.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The project is run by volunteers and the group intends to hold events on local beaches which will encourage wheelchair users and the local population to enjoy the wonders of our coast together. The specialist chairs enable families of wheelchair users to enjoy time on the beach which would otherwise be impossible with an ordinary wheelchair.
