About this cause
The Alice Cross Centre works to promote physical, social and mental wellbeing in older residents of Teignmouth & district by providing a venue for therapies, exercise, recreation and socialising. It offers a range of activities, including many forms of keep fit & dancing, table tennis, art, craft & photography classes, & music & drama performances. Exercise & dance classes improve strength & balance helping prevent trips & falls which can lead to premature immobility & potentially early death. Loneliness is detrimental to physical & mental well-being & people with a high degree of loneliness are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s. Loneliness & social isolation are linked to around a 30% increased risk of having a stroke or developing coronary artery disease. We help to combat this.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Sufferers of memory loss and their families tend to isolate themselves & hide their “embarrassing secret” from the world for as long as possible. Memory Cafés are often the only support provided to them. Cognitive stimulation can teach them coping mechanisms & increase their confidence to continue to participate in the community for longer. The community gains understanding of the problem.
