About this cause

When a child goes to school in the “wrong” clothes they are vulnerable to social exclusion, bullying, and low self-esteem. At Edinburgh School Uniform Bank, we aim to tackle these issues at an early stage by providing school uniforms to children in families experiencing financial hardship. Professionals like social workers and head teachers refer children to us and let us know what’s needed. We provide up to 6 items of brand new uniform, and extra items of top quality nearly-new uniform, as well as other essentials like pencil cases. Our charity is run entirely by volunteers. We have a great deal of support from local people, businesses and community leaders, but we need funds to fulfil every request. In 2017 we provided over 300 packs of uniform, and demand is rising steeply.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We work closely with teachers, support workers and community groups to identify what children need. We have a huge amount of support from local people, businesses and community leaders, including a network of drop-off points for donations all over the city. Children who receive a uniform pack from us are likely to experience better social inclusion amongst their classmates.
