Walthew House
Health
Help us to fund physical activities for people who have a sight or hearing loss, in order to improve health and tackle social isolation.
About this cause
Walthew House is an independent, volunteer-led charity in Stockport that supports people who are Blind, Visually Impaired, Deaf, Hard of Hearing or who have Dual Sensory Loss. Supporting over 250 people each week, the charity provides services from a visually impaired steel band and a youth club to counselling and a not-for-profit equipment resource centre. The centre is the only one of its kind in Greater Manchester. Those living with a sensory loss can often be at greater risk of social isolation so Walthew House aims to provide a welcoming environment where people can communicate with others. Round 2 of the Local Community Fund supported the charity's Making More Happen project, helping to increase opportunities and give a voice to service users to influence decision making.
How this cause brings people in the community together
This project stems from Making More Happen, an initiative that was supported by the Co-op Local Community Fund. Feedback received from consultation groups indicated that more physical activities would be of benefit to the health of community members, and would reduce the chances of NHS interventions being required in future. The project will focus on improving health and tackling social isolation.
