About this cause

Chopwell is a former mining community in an isolated, semi-rural location; an area of high deprivation, with a high number of private rented households. It also has one of the highest ratios of elderly and unemployed people in the borough. It is difficult to access services in the centre of Gateshead and has poor transport links. Chopwell Community Centre is one of the main providers of services in Chopwell village. The aim of our organisation is to provide social, leisure and informal education opportunities for the people of Chopwell and surrounding areas. We currently provide Gym facilities,Job search and CV workshop , Tea Dance, Craft, Drama Group, Exercise for toddlers and elderly to name a few of our services. Our objective is to maintain the current services and meet new demand.

How this cause brings people in the community together

This centre is a life line to many people in the village, there are a high numbers of elderly in the village and the tea dance encourages those whom are socially isolated to meet people within their age group in a warm, friendly, safe environment to partake in light exercise. Also, the majority of children are in low income families and we like to run an affordable gym class inclusive for all.
