About this cause

Ability Dogs 4 Young People is an Isle of Wight charity training assistance dogs (Ability Dogs) to help young people and children with physical or mental disabilities (or both), including cerebral palsy, autism and epilepsy. We also train Therapy Ability Dogs who visit groups of severely disabled young people and children in their schools or respite care homes. Additionally, we now provide a service for “Own Trained Ability Dogs” whereby we train a disabled youngster’s own dog to pass the Public Access Test, enabling them to become a qualified jacketed assistance dog. For the youngsters on our waiting list, we hold weekly “Paws 4 U” sessions so they can begin to interact with the Ability Puppies in Training.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Our placed Ability Dogs help disabled young people and their families live fuller and more inclusive lives. Our Therapy Ability Dogs help groups of children with severe disabilities to increase their well-being, (they visit schools and respite care homes). We also have lots of volunteering roles for the wider community to get involved with and help. All of our puppy parents are volunteers.
