About this cause

The Shed was created to help retired, unemployed and lonely people by providing an opportunity for them to socialise and learn and improve various practical skills. A work space will be provided as well as tools, materials and help for people undertaking woodwork or upholstery projects. The objectives are to reduce loneliness, foster a sense of self-worth and support the local community by doing simple repairs and making items as needed. A secondary aim is to help the environment by repairing and restoring items that would otherwise be discarded. A space will be adapted, tools and material made available and help and supervision provided 3-4 days a week for people to work on their own projects, or if they choose on fund-raising or community activities. The initial period is two years.

How this cause brings people in the community together

By providing an opportunity for isolated members of the community to meet others of like mind and be useful. By offering repair and refurbishment services to other community organisations and those in need, eg making planters for beautification projects, toys for the children's ward at the hospital, or repairing garden tools.
