Thornton and Allerton Community Association
Community Development
We are applying for a Community Asset Transfer of our building. This will enable us to be a sustainable organisation for the next 50 years.
About this cause
Since opening in 1982 South Square Centre has built a sustainable grassroots community centre, comprising community spaces, studios, a shop, a café and arts spaces. Thornton Antiquarian Society’s archive is housed on site making it accessible to local people. We offer a variety of paid training apprenticeships for unemployed and young people as well as a many volunteering opportunities. (All our trainees have progressed into paid employment.) There is a core programme of free workshops for families; socials for older people; workshops working with Bradford Action for Refugees and a young persons steering group coordinating events on site. We provide space for local community groups to meet and host events as well as a platform for numerous Bradford-based small enterprises and businesses.
How this cause brings people in the community together
This will provide more opportunities for local people to get involved and volunteer. It will inevitably boost moral and well-being in Thornton, and also raise the profile of the village city and region wide. Support from the Coop at this crucial point in the organisations life will also benefit many other groups (including the Antiquarian Society and the Community Library)
