About this cause

We offer a youth drop in service from our Barnard Castle centre in the evenings. Young people aged between 12 and 18 come in to take part in activities such as cooking, games, quizzes and for computer access. We offer support with drug and alcohol awareness, sexual health advice and many other issues that come up in conversation. We also offer after school activities in local primary schools - eg STEM and Forest schools. Within the wider community we do inter-generational work, taking a small group of young people to help with craft sessions at local care homes. We also offer help and advice on accessing employment - CV writing and interview techniques, vocational courses and apprenticeships.

How this cause brings people in the community together

There has been no job centre within Barnard Castle for the last 15 years, so job seekers need to travel to either Bishop Auckland or Darlington Job Centre Plus - a 30 mile round trip. Residents of the upper dales also need to travel a similar distance to get to Barnard Castle - requiring two separate bus journeys if they rely on public transport.
