About this cause

AFRIL works to alleviate poverty and isolation within the refugee and asylum seeker community in and around Lewisham. Our aim is to help this vulnerable group to integrate into their new community, and build to secure, meaningful, and self-sufficient lives by catering sensitively to the complex and interlinked social, emotional and practical needs of our clients. Through flexible and inter-connected services, we support refugees and asylum seekers who are encountering different challenges at different stages of their life. Our core programmes include: a Saturday supplementary school for Reception, KS1 and KS2, ESOL Classes to help Adults engage in their community, Advice Centre which offers information on asylum, housing, benefits, healthcare, immigration and a Foodbank.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Confidence in speaking English makes it easier for kids to make friends at school. Many asylum seeker and refugee adults can feel isolated in Lewisham. When their children are sociable it creates opportunities for parent to meet others, enabling a more integrated community. Also, Children who achieve in primary have a better chance of doing well in the future, improving employment opportunities.
