About this cause

Men's sheds, like the one in Ellon are now springing up in many UK communities. Men's Sheds are simply a place (workshop, social area and garden) where men can socialise with kindred spirits, while having the opportunity to learn new skills and practice old ones. Men's Sheds aim to help mainly retired men by preventing isolation, improving social interaction and enabling them to enjoy an active, healthy and meaningful retirement. This has a positive feedback to their families and the wider community who will also benefit from the activities they undertake and the skills they possess. In some cases men's wives have initiated their husbands becoming members to give them a purpose in life. NHS and Social work departments support and believe in the health benefits of the men's shed culture.

How this cause brings people in the community together

This gardening project opens up to the involvement of men who are not so agile or in a wheelchair, as well as those men who are fully capable gardeners. Shed membership is free and we already have over 70 members. We work with other community groups ( Rotary, Round Table, Schools, Nurseries, Ellon residents) to enhance the wider community as our activities and involvement can demonstrate.
