Beannachar Camphill Community
Health
We want to bring together young adults with learning disabilities and local people to construct a new straw bale building for our charity.
About this cause
Beannachar is a training centre in Aberdeenshire for 36 young adults with learning disabilities aged 17 to 30 (18 residential students;18 day placements). We support each person to reach their fullest potential and become as independent as possible for their next step in life. Students take part in structured work sessions such as workshops in weaving, woodwork & sculpture; organic farming; maintenance of gardens & woodlands; and ‘Tools for Self-Reliance’ (national partnership where we refurbish old tools and send to African countries). Students also contribute to running their homes such as cooking meals, and have time in the evenings/weekends for exercise, hobbies and outings. This helps students to develop their skills, independence and feel purpose and belonging to the wider community.
How this cause brings people in the community together
This project will bring people together where everyone will be supported to make a meaningful & purposeful contribution in the construction, no matter their disability. This equality of participation is in line with Co-Op's values. The public will engage with people with learning disabilities and everyone will learn valuable skills, build confidence and leave a lasting legacy for our charity.
