International Academy of Greenwich

Education & Skills

We want a proper library to give children access to books to help them study but also books which increase knowledge of their local area.

About this cause

The International Academy of Greenwich is a small secondary school which was set up by a group of parents and educators who were keen to have a non-selective, inclusive community school in their local area. The school's mission is to help every student to "Become a Global Citizen" and the school promotes tolerance and empathy throughout its curriculum which is modelled on the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. This broad and balanced approach to education values the individual strengths and interests of all children but, in order to achieve this aim and without the benefits of the economies of scale enjoyed by larger schools, the school is dependent on resourcing its personalised curriculum in creative ways, for example, through the use of volunteers and fundraising.

How this cause brings people in the community together

By having a small library on site, we would be able to carry out inter-generational projects which are an integral part of the International Baccalaureates's Active Citizenship and Community element. We would invite visitors to our library to read to children, to help supervise revision clubs and, most importantly, to share their knowledge of the local area with the children.
