About this cause

We have a great impact on the lives of people in Essex with sight loss by supporting, empowering and inspiring them with high quality services to meet their changing needs. Each year our charity supports over 4,000 Essex people with sight loss with information, advice and support to help them regain their independence and self-confidence. They mostly live in the districts of Uttlesford, Braintree, Harlow, Chelmsford, Epping Forest and Brentwood where 73,400 people are registered with mild, moderate or severe sight loss (source: RNIB); in many cases their sight is deteriorating. We are here to help them, and their carers/family members. There are many more people with sight loss who are hidden from official figures - only about one-third of those eligible actually register.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Imagine losing your sight you can understand how traumatic and distressing this would be. People tell us that they struggle with a range of emotions from shock, anger, sadness and frustration, to depression and grief. Coping with this can be very difficult, not to mention the practical adjustments you have to make to your life to stay safe, and retain your independence and quality of life.
