The Woodhouse Centre
Community Development
We want to purchase tools and equipment to enable members to be creative and feel part of a club.
About this cause
The Woodhouse Centre offers companionship and a friendly, creative environment for the retired and disabled residents of Oxted and surrounding area. The members participate in a wide variety of work such as knitting, needlework, chair caning and upholstery. All items produced at the Centre are available to buy and they are also sold at our Autumn and Spring Fairs. Last year we took the decision to turn our unused garage into a workshop and our "Men-in-Sheds" project was born. This idea that originated from Australia has been shown to provide mental health benefits for older men (and women) who may feel isolated and lonely. Teaching woodwork and being creative will achieve self esteem. Our aim is to provide a meeting place with tools and resources which will need funding.
How this cause brings people in the community together
We are extremely lucky that one of our members has experience in setting up workshops and teaching adults (including those with special needs and learning difficulties) and another has experience in restoration work so the tools will enable them to pass on their knowledge to many others in the community along with the added mental health benefits a club such as this can also bring
