About this cause

Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service supports children (aged 0-19 years) with a life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families throughout Berkshire and the surrounding areas. We provide respite care, play activities, symptom management, end-of-life care and bereavement support for the child and their families. Our objective is to support the child and whole family through a holistic approach to care. Based in Maidenhead we work within the community helping families in their own home, hospital and school. Children are supported, from the point of diagnosis to end of life, by the Alexander's Care Team; experienced paediatric nurses, a play specialist and trained carers. Our new children’s hospice in Maidenhead, the first in the county, will open in 2017.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The project will give children a safe place to play in their community. The complexity of the children’s conditions mean they currently have limited opportunity to attend nursery, sporting or social groups. Volunteers from the community will be encouraged to support the project by working alongside our staff to support activities e.g. arts & crafts, sports, environmental activities.
