About this cause
Coalburn Miners' Welfare Charitable Society/One Stop Shop is a multi use community facility incorporating a Heritage Centre; Beauty Room; Charity Shop; Food Cooperative; Darby & Joan Club; Box & Fiddle Club; Jive Class; OAP Club; Gala Day Committee; Slimming Class; Community Café; Citizens Advice Centre; Training Service; CISWO Social Worker. The facility is the hub of the local community and delivers vital services and activities. There is a very high population of unemployed, elderly and young mothers in the village and transport links are poor, The objectives are to provide such forms of recreation and other leisure time occupation as are conductive to the improvement of the conditions of living of the inhabitants of Coalburn and to address rural exclusion and isolation.
How this cause brings people in the community together
This project is aimed at linking the differing generations through a range of training and courses. The majority of user groups within the community are at a disadvantage through rural isolation, low income and a lack of opportunities, unemployment, poor skills and health issues. The Charity has carried out a feasibility study and these are the courses that the community have asked for.
