About this cause

Friends of Whitworth Youth was set up in December 2016 to provide a youth club for high school age children in Whitworth when the previous youth club (515) closed due to funding cuts at the provider, Lancashire County Council. We knew there was a demand in Whitworth with up to 50 children attending 515 -all of whom generally lived within walking distance. Two local churches and a local business, Anglo Recycling, provided the up front capital to employ a part time youth leader. Other staff members are volunteers. Lancs CC has been very supportive in setting up safeguarding and other procedures. The youth club is open to all, every Monday night between 6.30 and 9 pm, and is run on the same lines as 515- albeit we have had to find a new location.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Since the old youth club closed down, the community is delighted that Anglo Recycling set up 'Friend's of Whitworth Youth' winning a Whitworth Mayor's award for Community action as a result. To help prevent isolation in quite a rural community, the group provides a safe, fun space to socialise mid-week and opportunities for young people to engage with the community through organising events.
