Sunnyside Community Gardens

We want to make a proper kitchen space in our portacabin, which is our main building, and run a food growing and healthy eating project.

About this cause

Sunnyside Community Gardens is a community garden in Archway, North Islington, which specialises in therapeutic horticulture for people with disabilities, and those recovering from illness. We have been here since 1977, and registered as a charity in 1992. Local residents set up Sunnyside and it has developed into a beautiful organic garden, designated a site of importance for nature conservation, with a wildlife pond. It is a tranquil and peaceful green oasis for local people, many of whom live in flats without gardens. People with profound special needs attend the garden regularly for special art and gardening sessions, Ron and Ian two of our users have been coming to Sunnyside for over 20 years.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Sunnyside is a community hub. A wide range of local people come to volunteer, drop in on an ad hoc basis and take part in events. When the weather is good, our users and volunteers spend most of their time in the gardens, but when the weather is bad people spend more time inside the portacabin which is run down. This project will mean that we will be able to combat isolation all year round.
