We need specialist manuals and reading books so adults can learn to read or improve poor reading ability.
About this cause
We provide one to one tuition for adults who struggle with reading. They may be entirely unable to read, or have limited reading ability. Our parent charity, ReadEasy, has developed a specialist reading scheme and resources to encourage and support learners, including people with specific needs, e.g. dyslexia. All learners work at their own pace. There is a further stage of support to consolidate skills and give the confidence to move on to other opportunities, including learning to write. Around one in six adults in the UK has problems reading. This has major impacts; they can't understand important information, vote, read instructions, menus, shopping lists, or read to their children . As well, it is a major issue in relation to employment prospects, limiting earnings potential.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Learners will be able to do ordinary tasks like food shopping,using public transport and reading to children. Their employment prospects will improve considerably, helping their families as well. They will be able to understand health and other important information, be able to vote and take part in public and community life, engage with the world around them better, and make informed choices.
