About this cause

SIJA offers training and practical experience in the traditional maritime/seamanship skills that have been part of the fishing heritage of St. Ives and which were becoming lost to the local community. Using lug-rigged sailing in hand-built wooden boats, and offering membership of the charity for only £25 per year, we make this heritage sailing opportunity open to all. Our objectives are to "promote community participation in healthy recreation, in particular by the provision of facilities to enable participation in lug-rigged sailing" and to "advance the education of the public in the history and use of the Jumbo and the maritime heritage of St Ives". Part of our role is to teach boat maintenance, safety and team-building in our winter storage barn and we want to expand this opportunity.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We recognise the original fishing heritage of the town which is being displaced by tourist development. The old skills can be passed on by offering an inclusive approach to the local community who benefit from the fresh air, friendship, participation, engagement and interest - feeling valued and gaining a network to strengthen its sustainability and resilience to the seasonal pressures it faces.
