About this cause

Carymoor Environmental Trust is an environmental education charity based next to a landfill site just outside Castle Cary. Each year 5000 visitors come to us from schools and community groups. Our skilled staff team help our visitors to experience, and feel connected to, the natural world. We inspire them to live more sustainably and to care for their environment, through exciting activities at our unique location and by working out in the wider community. Volunteers play a vital role, supporting all aspects of our work. Over the past 20 years we have transformed 100 acres of capped landfill into a species-rich nature reserve. With a purpose-built environmentally-friendly centre and an astonishingly biodiverse nature reserve, Carymoor demonstrates that there is life after landfill.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Children & volunteers will learn traditional building techniques in fun, active workshops. The oven will be a long term resource for our visitors to try basic cooking, using vegetables from our polytunnel, and to learn about the benefits of local food and reducing food miles. Cobs ovens are an environmentally-friendly way to cook, made from natural materials and fuelled by locally-sourced wood.
