Laurel Avenue Lunch Club
Social Inclusion
We want to continue to run a lunch club for elderly and isolated members of the community, together with local community organisations.
About this cause
King's Church Durham is a community-based church that has been active in outreach and service to the local community since 2001, particularly in the Sherburn Road area and in partnership with other local groups. This includes a youth group for local young people, a befriending service and lunch club for elderly and potentially isolated members of the community, a garden clearing service for those unable to manage their own gardens, a support group for vulnerable or disadvantaged women, and family fun days at various times through the year. Our objectives with these activities are to alleviate poverty, foster positive relationships amongst local residents, provide support to those who are struggling and empower both individuals and the community as a whole to bring about positive change.
How this cause brings people in the community together
The project will help those who may be disadvantaged or socially isolated to receive a healthy meal and develop positive social relationships with each other, with the aim of both improving the welfare of those individuals and strengthening social ties within the community. The activities and trips will provide mental stimulation and enjoyment for attendees, improving physical and mental health.
