About this cause

Chard Museum is accredited by the Arts Council. As part of its accreditation it is mandatory to have a five year plan. One of the primary aims of our plan is to improve the audio visual capabilities of the museum in order to attract more visitors, especially the younger generation. Introduction of audio pens is a major starting point. With it we will be able to better display our vast collection of local social history. This covers over 800 years & contains collections of national importance. James Gillingham, a Victorian pioneer of prosthetic limbs. John Stringfellow who was the first person to fly a model powered aircraft in 1848. Col. Gifford, a leading figure in early X-Ray development & Margaret Bonfield, the first English female cabinet minister.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Local schools, groups of scouts, guides & brownies all visit each year. We welcome & encourage all young people with free admittance to the museum. This is our target audience & our aim is to increase their interactive experience during the visit so they understand the living story behind the artefact or person. We also believe that by introducing technology this will appeal to all ages
