About this cause

We teach children, aged 6 to 12 years, how to keep themselves safe. Schools' book visits to our life size village, called Hazard Alley. It contains 12 everyday familiar scenarios such as a kitchen, living room and a street. Children are in groups led by a volunteer guide through the scenarios looking for risks/dangers and suggesting ways of keeping themselves safe. The immersive nature of the learning experience is highly effective and visits are remembered into adulthood. Staying safe online is a key strand of our learning programme, we deliver workshops to children and briefings to parents. We also take bookings from cub and brownie leaders who visit when doing their safety badge. We also organise one family open day a year, where admission is free to everyone.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Teaching children how to keep themselves safe will reduce the likelihood of injury & accidents. Safe children equals happy families and also reduces the burden on stretched emergency services. Feedback from the last open day suggests that families want to come and visit us in the school holidays & the funding will allow us to try out different activities and see what works for local families.
