About this cause

Using trained RDA coaches and specially selected horses, Ravelrig RDA provides therapeutic riding lessons and associated equine activities for disabled and disadvantaged young people from Edinburgh and the Lothians. A unique form of physical and mental rehabilitation is provided, which delivers opportunities for therapy, achievement, exercise, sport and enjoyment. Working across the spectrum of disabilities, the focus is to help each individual derive a direct benefit and to achieve their personal goal. Our aim is that, through building confidence, self-esteem and communication skills, our riders and volunteers are better placed to play an active role in the wider community. We believe that everyone has something to offer, no matter their history or the severity of their disadvantage.

How this cause brings people in the community together

We provide coaching to 100 riders per week. The complex movement of the horse provides mental and physical relaxation to participants as well as improving co-ordination, balance, self-esteem, trust and even communication skills. Families of our disabled riders can be extremely stressed, and the disappointment of having a riding session cancelled through lack of a coach can be a breaking point.
