About this cause

Biggar Museum Trust owns and operates the independent Biggar & Upper Clydesdale Museum covering the history of the area from earliest times. A new museum opened in 2015 bringing together collections displayed and stored in old buildings around Biggar into a purpose built building in the town centre. The project attracted strong local support but receives no regular public funding. It is attracting 10,000 visitors p.a. and has received a number of awards, five stars from VisitScotland, The Museums and Heritage award for Fundraising and the Queen's Award for Volunteering. Local residents are admitted free and otherwise income is from admissions, shop sales , donations and sponsorship. The Museum attracts visitors to the town who benefit the local economy and is also an educational resource.

How this cause brings people in the community together

It will ensure the long-term survival of our historic items for future generations to learn and benefit from. We will also be able to improve access to our archives for members of the public to do research. Moreover, it will be quicker and easier to find objects from our vast and varied collection, enabling us to improve and tailor our education and events offerings, and make them more engaging.
