About this cause

Our objectives are to provide safe, quality training and opportunity for local people to enjoy rowing in a traditional Cornish pilot gig. A pilot gig has six rowers, fixed seat and a cox. 98% of our members are from Looe and immediate area. We cover a wide range of ages, 14-70, ability and expectations. In summer we row evenings 3 times per week,in winter we row Saturdays, our provision is all year round. We offer free taster sessions to those wanting to have a go,and have indoor rowing machines available for inclement weather. We need additional equipment to cope with demand. Interest in our sport has grown dramatically as a result of local heros, e.g. Helen Glover and interest in rowing, result of British successes. We fund raise all year ensuring that our membership fees are attractive.

How this cause brings people in the community together

By offering more opportunities. Rowing is a healthy sport covering ages 14 upwards, many row at 70+. Looe is a rural town with limited access to sporting facilities. There has been a rowing club in Looe since 1930s. We need to keep this traditional Cornish sport alive. We have indoor rowing machines when weather inclement. Rowing on the river, we are a tourist attraction on Summer evenings.
