Ardentinny Community Trust
Community Development
We want to buy a (disabled) eco compost toilet which is needed for persons of all ages and abilities who visit and work in the garden.
About this cause
Ardentinny Community Trust purchased Glenfinart Walled Garden from the Forestry Commission Scotland in 2012 with the express aim of turning it back into a community resource and saving it from dereliction. It is a Victorian structure and a B listed site which was originally the kitchen garden for Glenfinart House and Estate. When the Trust took ownership of the garden, in 2012 it was a wilderness but now is divided into 5 main areas: an orchard, a growing area, children's garden, sensory garden and public area. We hold events, provide a restful space for people to bring loved ones and a stress free environment in which to volunteer. Volunteers include Community Payback, the disabled, people at risk of being homeless, unemployed, senior pupils with additional needs and the elderly.
How this cause brings people in the community together
The garden and its history brings visitors to the area. It provides volunteering opportunities to the young, old and disadvantaged. Carers and groups bring their clients to the garden to relax and enjoy the space but also to volunteer where appropriate. Community Payback work in the garden and people from the Job Centre and the Grammar School Learning Centre come on work experience.
