All Saints Old Heathfield Graveyard
Community Development
We want to improve the graveyard which is overgrown and out of control in some areas and resurface its muddy, slippery public footpath.
About this cause
Our organisation's objective is to promote the use of All Saints Church Old Heathfield for the benefit of all the inhabitants of the civil parish of Heathfield and to maintain, renew, improve or replace the structure and fabric of the church and churchyard as required. We have raised nearly £200,000 in the last 10 years to repair the roof, install a kitchen, office and toilet and to renew the heating. The church building is now dual purpose; used for worship and for community activities. Now we need to improve the state of the churchyard on behalf of everyone who uses it as a burial ground (any resident of the civil parish maybe buried there), as a through way on the public footpaths that cross it, as a place of quiet and peacefulness and as a natural and historical resource.
How this cause brings people in the community together
The state of the graveyard at present is disrespectful to those who are buried there and discouraging to those who visit older graves. We will plant a wild flower mix in one area and place insect and hedgehog boxes to encourage wild life. The graves of notable people buried in the churchyard will be signmarked to aid local historical research and a grassy area will be developed for picnics.
