Dementia Friendly Keighley Exercise Class
Social Inclusion
We want to expand our exercise class for people with dementia and relieve social isolation for this vulnerable group.
About this cause
The aim of our group is to help Keighley become a Dementia Friendly Community. We engage with business, shops, banks, healthcare facilities, community groups and the general public to try and help them all become more dementia aware. We also provide support and activity groups for people with dementia and their carers/families. We have recently opened an office/information centre in the shopping centre where anyone can come and see us who may want/need information or advice on any dementia related issues. We are now also working towards opening a 'drop in' centre, where people with dementia can stay with us for a few hours so their carer/loved one can attend an appointment, do some shopping or just simply have an hour or two to themselves. This will give much needed respite to many carers.
How this cause brings people in the community together
Being active and having fun helps us all to feel healthy and engaged with our community. Preventing social isolation and providing stimulation for the body and the brain helps people with dementia to live well for longer, making them able to contribute more to their communities. Providing volunteer opportunities relieves isolation and increases feelings of self-worth for fit elderly people.
