About this cause

TALK's aim is “to support people with aphasia (communication disability) by enabling them to practise all aspects of communication & promote confidence in a supportive environment, leading to increased participation & independence within the community.” Aphasia may mean difficulty with speech, understanding, reading or writing & can leave sufferers feeling frustrated, depressed and isolated. We provide 5 weekly two hour support groups in West Surrey for people who have developed aphasia after having a stroke; Ashford, Guildford (2), Walton on Thames & Woking. The benefits are increased confidence, social interaction, new skills & improved communication. Many members and carers tell us that TALK helped them "get their lives back". We currently help 82 individuals & their families.

How this cause brings people in the community together

It benefits the wider community because the confidence the members gain from these types of activity benefits them, their families & friends & everyone they come into contact with. If they feel happier, it places less dependence on the local healthcare provider & actively prevents depression. It supports the carer, as their loved one attends the group as they get a break from caring.
