About this cause

The Trust provides a museum focusing on Axbridge and the surrounding area, including all the villages that were once part of the former Axbridge Rural District. The museum has a core permanent collection illustrating local history, geology and archaeology, which is updated as necessary, and offers a programme of temporary exhibitions reflecting aspects of local life and heritage. The museum is staffed entirely by volunteer custodians who find it satisfying and educational. We work closely with the South West Federation of Museums and Art Galleries and with the National Trust who own the 15th century wood-framed jettied building in which the museum is based. We have over 4,500 visitors a year, including many children and school groups and receive excellent feedback from our visitors.

How this cause brings people in the community together

Axbridge has a long history and a wealth of records. For many in the local community this is an important feature and a source of pride in the town. We have long been aware of the need to produce a publication to draw together the information that is held in many different places and by a range of people. The hospitality and other businesses in the town would also benefit from this handbook.
