About this cause

Our Junior Band has been running in the local community for over 20 years, teaching local youngsters and adults to play brass instruments. The conductor of the band, Graham Buckley, has been tutoring children at Brookfield Primary School in Shirebook for over 5 years, to encourage more youngsters to join the band. The band provides brass instruments free of charge to all the youngsters and adults, and it also pays for all repairs and maintenance costs. We fund this through concerts. The objectives and aims of the band are to encourage young brass players in the local community, keeping the brass band tradition alive in the ex- colliery village of Shirebrook. It also aims to encourage those players to develop, so they are able to progress on to the main Shirebrook Miners welfare Band.

How this cause brings people in the community together

The Shirebrook Miners Welfare 'B' band already serves the local community in lots of ways during the year. If we received extra funding for these larger instruments, it would mean that we could continue to welcome new players into the band. We currently perform concerts in the local churches for a range of services, including Christmas,Remembrance Sunday, Summer flower festivals etc.
